The Woodlands Dog Park Guide

We spend all week in north Houston backyards, which means we hear every dog park opinion there is. Here's the local consensus on where to take your dog around The Woodlands, and what to know before you go.

Bear Branch Dog Park

The Woodlands classic, tucked into Bear Branch Park off Research Forest. Separate large- and small-dog yards, mature shade, and a sociable weekday-morning regular crowd. It's mulch-and-dirt underfoot, so after a rain, expect paws that need a towel (or three) at the door.

Cattail Dog Park (Creekside Park)

The newer favorite on the Creekside side, with open running room and a good fence line for ball dogs. Less shade than Bear Branch, so summer visits are a before-10am affair. Convenient if you're in Creekside, Liberty Branch, or anywhere off Kuykendahl.

The greenbelt "unofficial" option

With 220 miles of pathways, plenty of Woodlands dogs get their exercise on-leash through the villages instead. Etiquette note from the crews who service the greenbelt pet stations: the bags are free, so use them. (HOAs: we install and service those stations.)

Worth the drive

North of town, Conroe's Carl Barton Jr. Park has a big, well-kept dog park that's quieter on weekends. Out west, Magnolia folks mostly have the best dog park of all: their own acreage.

Post-park reality check

Dog parks are wonderful for dogs and slightly gross by definition, since shared ground means shared germs. Three habits keep it all in check:

• Bring water; don't share communal bowls if you can help it
• Check paws and coat before the car, since mulch and burrs travel
• Keep your own backyard picked up weekly, so the germs your dog meets at the park don't compound with the ones at home
